Brooklyn Navy Yard

Brooklyn Navy Yard (originally known as the New York Navy Yard) is a shipyard in Brooklyn that was turned into an industrial complex. It spans 300 acres, houses 300+ businesses and is an ecosystem in itself.
CNS provided specialty testing for a partial replacement of a steam line consisting of 12-inch pipe to be installed in Building 280. Installation of this piping required some complex connections to be installed from new piping to existing piping of differing wall sizes. CNS was able to provide clients with vital information regarding welding procedure specifications, acceptance criteria, and NYC Construction Code requirements. All welds were tested with Radiographic Testing. One advantage to Radiographic Testing is that it can be used on almost any material and can reveal discontinuities that are located on or below the surface. But along with its advantages it brings many obstacles. In order to safely test the pipe welds, CNS had to ensure that all buildings were vacant, and no pedestrians or workers were in a 50-foot radius of the pipe being tested. With a complex that runs 24 hours a day, CNS team coordinated with BNYDC facilities to ensure that the area was clear and safe for testing to take place. This included working all night and weekend hours, providing flagging and street enclosures during testing, and ensuring all testing work was completed so normal operations could resume between testing days.
